TWO 94-POINT AMARONE VINTAGES FOR SARAH HELLER

After Vini d'Italia of Gambero Rosso, Falstaff, Decanter, Slow Wine, AIS also Sarah Heller MW talks about the wines of Villa Spinosa

Valpolicella, September 12nd, 2024

In her report "The Amarone della Valpolicella Report 2024" Master of Wine Sarah Heller reviewed Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Docg 2018 and Albasini, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Docg 2016: she awarded both wines from Villa Spinosa 94 points!

Here are the two reviews by the Master of Wine:

Villa Spinosa, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2018
“…an elegant and expressive Amarone. The nose has subtle cherry notes, with a meatiness of bresaola and a hint of green peppercorns. The palate is rich in glycerol, very translucent but quite oily, with chalky, fine tannins, perhaps reflecting the unusually low fermentation temperatures (10–18ºC [50–64°F]). The 16.5% alcohol is well integrated, although it leaves a subtle sense of sweetness on the finish”.

Villa Spinosa, Albasini, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2016
“…Albasini is the flagship of this Negrar producer. The nose is similar to Grenache, with raspberry coulis, scrub, dry earth, rosemary flowers and sweet spices, perhaps from a year in French oak tonneaux (although it spends another four years in Slavonian barrels). Resinous dried herbs and bittersweet raspberry dominate the entry, where it feels rich and almost dense. The acidity really develops from the mid-palate onwards, balancing but not penetrating the density of the structure. Tannins are light and dusty on the back palate.”
